Law No. 16/1997 on Statistics and Government Regulation No. 51/1999 on Statistical Administration mandates the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) to carry out its duties and responsibilities as coordinator of statistical activities in Indonesia. In carrying out these tasks, BPS performs the functions of Coordination, Integration, Standardization, and Synchronization. Thus, BPS should be able to become a reference for the implementation of statistical activities. Therefore, BPS provides consulting services for statistical activities to statistical activity organizers. In fact, specifically for government agencies, BPS provides recommendations for statistical activities.

Meanwhile, based on its utilization, statistics in Indonesia are divided into 3 (three) types, namely basic, sectoral, and special statistics. This is in accordance with Article 5 of Law Number 16 of 1997.

  • Basic Statistics are statistics that are used for broad purposes, both government and community, which have cross-sectoral characteristics, national and regional scale, macro, and whose implementation is the responsibility of BPS.
  • Sectoral Statistics are statistics whose utilization is intended to meet the needs of certain government agencies in the context of implementing government tasks and development tasks which are the main tasks of the relevant government agencies. Although the program implementation is the responsibility of the relevant government agencies, in practice the implementation can cooperate with BPS.
  • Special Statistics are statistics whose utilization is intended to meet the internal needs of a private agency/company in the context of conducting research or research. Although the implementation is the responsibility of the relevant agencies/companies, in practice the implementation can cooperate with BPS.

As the coordinator of statistical activities, BPS provides metadata information stored in the Statistical Reference Information System (SIRuSa). This information can be accessed by anyone, anytime, and anywhere because it is built on a web-based basis. Therefore, currently BPS Hulu Sungai Utara Regency is conducting metadata data collection in agencies in Hulu Sungai Utara Regency. The collected metadata can be accessed on the sirusa.bps.go.id .
